Our Kindergarteners are learning about Monarch butterflies as we paint giant butterflies. These giant paintings will turn into costumes, transforming our Kindergarteners into Monarch butterflies! While painting we are learning about how Monarch butterflies migrate to Evanston from Mexico each year. We are also planing our own Monarch butterfly sanctuary garden here at Oakton. I am so excited to be starting a new year with all of our young artists! Each artist started the year by reading "The Dot" by Peter H. Reynolds. We all painted just one dot and reflected on where this dot will take us! "The Dot" teaches students about GROWTH MINDSET, encouraging students to take risks in their art work. Be sure to check out our art gallery by the art room to see our many unique dots on display! Our 5th graders are creating some delightful and unique self portraits to add to our Oakton installation!
The art room was awarded an Innovation Grant to have ipads! We are using the iPads to reflect on our artwork as we create videos, view project techniques and document our projects. We are using Class Dojo to record our student stories, please be sure to check out your student's Class Dojo account to see our reflections!
Our dedicated STEAM Club members meet weekly and this year we have been working with VEX IQ curriculum and tools to create ROBOTS! The world needs the students of today to become the scientists, engineers, and problem solving leaders of tomorrow.
Creating ROBOTS provides a fun and engaging vehicle to begin the journey toward becoming the type of problem solver our world needs the most. We are building skills that will be expected of a 21st century innovator! Oakton artists are reflecting on all of the people, places and things we love as we make maps of our hearts! We are kicking off heart health month as we learn about how our hearts work, and why the heart is a symbol for love. Please visit our display in the Art Gallery outside the Art Room to see our students' beautiful hearts! Our Oakton students would like to say "THANK YOU" for all of your generous Lego donations, keep them coming! Students can choose to work on design challenges in the Legos Studio during our Art Centers rotations. We are learning about engineering and taking turns all while having FUN! |
